January 2010

Get a first hand view of the gray whales as they make their annual southern trek from the frigid waters of the Bering and Chukchi seas to the warm lagoons of Baja California.  More information about the California Gray whales.

February

Although Big Sur is known for its dynamic winter weather, locals look forward to warm spells that seem to occur almost predictably at this time of year. And if the sun doesn't shine, what better way to wile away an afternoon than in front of the fireplace with a good book.

March

Here come the whales again! Watch as the Gray whale mother-calf pairs migrate back towards the Arctic. More information about the California Gray whales.

April

Humpback whales are feeding off the Big Sur coastline. You will occasionally see them breaching and "spy hopping." Watch from high roadside turnouts.


Point Sur Lightstation
Beginning in April through the beginning of October, monthly moonlight tours are held at Point Sur Lightstation. First lit in 1889, it has remained in continuous operation and stands 361 feet above the surf on a large volcanic rock. Year round tours are available. The Big Sur International Marathon. Run or walk the 26 scenic miles to Carmel or just take it easy while listening to the music of world renowned artists.

California Condor Viewing Tour ($50/person)
This two-hour tour will take you down the coast with Ventana Wildlife Society trained staff to view magnificient and endangered California condors. We will use radio telemetry to track wild birds while taking in the beautiful Big Sur coast.

June

Balmy evenings make this the perfect time to take a moonlit tour of the Point Sur lighthouse. On the night of the full moon, docents lead a 2-1/2 to 3 hour tour of this navigational landmark. Blue and Humpback whales return to the Big Sur/Monterey area to feed on abundant krill. See the largest mammals on earth from roadside turnouts throughout the summer months.

July

Escape the summer heat - the cool sea air usually keeps coastal temperatures in the comfortable 60 degree range. Visit the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce Calendar of Events page for more summertime activities. Lots of activities at the Henry Miller Memorial Library.

Campfire Program - activities for the whole family.

August

Get away before the kids return to school. Park Rangers host a weekly Jr. Ranger program and there is a daily campfire program for the family to enjoy.

CALLING ALL KIDS! Are you Ranger material? Kids between the ages of 7 and 12 are invited to join us for Junior Rangers, an hour of games, crafts, and fun designed to help you learn about our State Parks and our natural and cultural environment. Junior Rangers meets every day except Sunday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Campfire Center in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Kids only!

And for the younger crowd...Join us for Ranger Cubs! Kids 7 and under--and their moms, dads, and other friends and family--are invited to meet at the Campfire Center at 11:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursdays and Saturday for a half-hour of stories, crafts, and outdoor fun.

September

Celebrate the kids return to school with a romantic getaway. A fireplace room and a bottle of wine are a cozy antidote for a chilly fall evening.



October

Big Sur enjoys some of its best weather in this month. The skies are bright blue as the moderate temperatures keep the fog at bay and the forest becomes alive with color as the leaves of the deciduous trees turn.
