The winter months in Big Sur are truly amazing as large pods of California Gray Whales travel twice during the season, migrating along the California coast line; down to the enticingly warm waters of Mexico’s lagoons where these magnificent creatures of the deep mate and then return once more to their traditional feeding grounds in the icy waters off the coast of Alaska.
Summer in Big Sur is filled with warm days that usher in the largest mammal on Earth ; The Blue Whale. This behemoth of the sea, along with its majestic cousin the Humpback Whale, share the glistening waters of Big Sur’s coastline as they rejoice in the hunt for the abundant Krill that come with the summer season. From almost any point on the coast of Big Sur, you can see these gentle giants as they feed and frolic. Bring your binoculars because you never know when you might want to turn off the many roadside stops and experience this amazing event.
