There are a multitude of things to do while you're in Big Sur. One of is to simply "Do Nothing." Sit by a stream and listen to the breeze drift through the redwoods. Lay on a beach and watch for whales and dolphins... your version of "Nothing" is limited only by your imagination.

During winter the whole population of California Gray Whales migrates twice past the central California coast: once when going to the warm lagoons of Mexico to spawn and breed, and once again when returning to their feeding grounds in the frigid waters off the coast of Alaska.

During summer months the coastal waters off of Big Sur are host to the largest mammals on earth, the Blue Whale. In addition, Humpback Whales are sharing the waters as they enjoy the abundant krill. You can spot whales from most any point that you can see the ocean. Roadside turnouts sometimes offer the best viewing! Make sure to bring your binoculars.

MeWay Falls - Julia Pfeffer Burns State ParkOn land, enjoy our feathered friends the California Condors, that are being reintroduced to the rugged Las Padres National Forest by the Ventana Wilderness Society. Condors are commonly spotted roosting in the trees above the Big Sur Lodge and can be seen soaring above the Big Sur Valley from the outdoor dining area.

Another ambitious project championed by the Ventana Wilderness Society is the reintroduction of American Bald Eagles to Big Sur. Keep your eyes to the sky and you may spot one of these regal birds. You're sure to see red tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and at night, owls are a fairly common site.

If birding is a hobby for you, the Ventana Wilderness Society has an ornithology lab at the entrance to Andrew Molera State Park. Visit the Ventana Wilderness Society for more information about the birding and ecology projects they are organizing. Click Here to download a copy of the birds you may find in Big Sur.

Pfeiffer BeachIf your interests are geared a little more towards strenuous activities, then there are several places where you can take a day hike. Local day hikes include long beach walks, traversing deep into a redwood tree lined canyon, or climbing high up on a ridge top to capture the breathtaking panoramic views of the Big Sur valley. All of these hikes that originate in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park are walking distance from your cottage.

If a day of roaming around Big Sur has you ready to go out at night or if you just need to pick up a few supplies at the general store, the following information will set you off in the right direction. General stores, local restaurants, cafes, and pubs are included here.
