Whale Watching

Gray Whales

January and February (weekends)
10:00 am–Noon

The winter months in Big Sur are truly amazing as large pods of California gray whales migrate along the California coastline twice a year. California State Parks is proud to present ranger-guided whale watching and California condor spotting. Meet at the vista point on Highway 1 at mile marker 37 just north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

Blue and Humpback Whales

Summer in Big Sur is filled with warm days that usher in the blue whale, the largest mammal on earth. This behemoth of the sea, along with its majestic cousin, the humpback whale, share the glistening waters of Big Sur’s coastline as they rejoice in the hunt for the abundant krill. From almost any point on the coast of Big Sur, you can see these gentle giants as they feed and frolic.
